The active ingredients, known as kavalactones, calm the mind and ease the body. More than a drink, kava is a way of bringing people together.

The traditional way
Kava drinking is often casual, but it also plays an important role in village ceremonies: welcoming, naming, initiation, healing, marriages and funerals.
For generations, roots are prepared and shared from one large communal bowl. You clap once before you drink and three times after — a ritual of respect, friendship and belonging.
A tradition of honour
For generations across the Pacific, kava has carried a significance far beyond the drink itself. In 19th-century Fiji, yaqona was reserved for chiefs and priests as part of important ceremonies — a tradition deeply connected with leadership, respect and community.
That ceremonial tradition has continued to welcome distinguished guests and royalty. Queen Elizabeth II took part in a traditional kava ceremony during her 1953 visit to Fiji, while King Charles III was welcomed to Samoa with a Royal ‘Ava Ceremony in 2024.
